4 MYTHS ABOUT HOME SECURITY SYSTEMS

There are many misconceptions floating around about home security. This article looks to change that. We’ve gone ahead and debunked four common myths about residential alarm systems.

1. You only need a security system if you live in the city

This is false. In fact, if you live in the country, you have all the more reason to have robust home security. Very often, burglars target rural homes because, with few neighbours around and typically no police stations close by, they’re less likely to be spotted or to get caught.

The numbers on this are quite clear. According to the most recent data from Statistics Canada, released in 2018, the rate of rural crime is 38% more than that of urban crime in Alberta.

2. My dog is all the security I need

While it’s true that a noisy dog who’ll wake up the entire house when someone they don’t know tries to enter your home has its merits, the fact is your dog is more likely to get hurt than it is to deter burglars. A determined burglar can and will harm a dog, especially since that’s a lot easier than disabling an alarm. As a result, a “Beware of Dog” sign is a much less effective deterrent than a sign indicating you have an alarm system. In fact, just having a “Beware of Dog” sign is a pretty clear indication to burglars that your home doesn’t have a security system. Otherwise, you would have surely advertised that fact instead.

3. You don’t need home security if you live in a good neighbourhood

Living in a safe neighbourhood may decrease your risk of being burglarized, but not by much. In fact, many burglars specifically target homes in safer, more prosperous neighbourhoods, figuring that that’s where they’ll get the best loot. Basically, no matter where you live, you’re rolling the dice if you neglect your home security.

4. Burglars can get around alarm systems

Despite what films may have you believe, if you have a quality alarm system, you can be sure that no intruder will be able to disarm it. This is thanks partly to the fact that most modern home security systems are wireless, so they can’t be deactivated by cutting wires. It’s worth noting, moreover, that 85% of break-ins are committed by inexperienced burglars.
